The Japanese aorid amphipod Grandidierella japonica is native to the northwestern Pacific Ocean around Japan. The species was introduced to Western Europe through oyster transport and is likely further spread within Europe via shipping or recreational boating. The first observation in Belgium dates back to 2018, when the amphipod was detected in the Scheldt estuary near Doel. The species occurs in muddy substrates in the intertidal or subtidal zone of brackish water systems, but it appears to have a limited presence in Belgium so far.
