Abstract
The study aims at a quantification of the effects of predation by zooplankton on phytoplankton and the components of the microbial loop (ciliates, heterotrophic nanoflagellates and bacteria) in shallow, eutrophic lakes and ponds. The study
addresses both ecological (influence on population and community structure) and evolutionary (the evolution of predator-induced defences) aspects. A total of four shallow ponds have been selected as model systems; all of these are shallow and eutrophic but they differ in water transparency ('turbid' versus 'clear' water state), related to the presence or absence of submerged macrophytes).
