Abstract
    In mussels the movement of the cilia on the gill are basically autonomous and influenced by environmental factors. The branchial nerve has an inhibitory as well as a stimulating effect on the activity of the lateral cilia. The reactions of these cilia to changing temperature and chlorinity in isolated gill fragments and in undamaged young mussels were compared. It is concluded that the activity of the lateral cilia is regulated in such a way that the direct influence of the studied environmental factors is compensated. Probably the latero-frontal cilia are not under such a nervous control. The functionality of the regulatian of the various ciliary tracts in the mussel gill is discussed.
