Abstract
A sampling technique, and its problems to obtain SiO2 from living benthic diatoms in the western Dutch Wadden Sea for determination of 32Si radioactivity is described. Small samples (about 0.5 grams of SiO2) with about 3% non-biogenic silica (quartz, clay minerals) can be obtained by repeated decantation and filtration. For greater samples a new method for determination of the amount of impurities in the sample with an accuracy up to 2.5% is proposed. This method uses the differences in infrared absorption in the region 950 to 1020 cm-1 between the diatoms and Si-containing minerals. Little knowledge about the composition of the impurities is needed in this method.
