Abstract
Vertical distribution of some biochemical parameters - ATP, ETS, chlorophyl a, respiration and energy change - was studiedin a tidal flat of the Dutch Waddensea and in an artificial system for the purpose of describing these parameters in and around the dwelling tube of Arenicola marina. It is shown that in general the concentrations of ATP and chlorophyl a, and the activity of the electron transport and respiration as well decline with depth. Significant higher levels of ATP were found in the dwelling tube, both at the funnel side (between 7-15 cm depth) and at the excretion side. This enrichment of biomass might be explained by biomass- rich surface sediment moving down the funnel or by better growth conditions for micro-organisms in the wall of the dwelling tube, as a result of the combination of oxygen supply and organic matter rich sediment.
