The influence of temperature and salinity on the growth of Metridium senile L. was examined. To this end artificial clones were obtained by making use of the regenerative power of disc tissue Metridium. As a criterion for growth the surface of the disc was used. It was found that the temperature optimum as well as the salinity optimum varied within certain limits for different individuals. At 11°/oo Cl a temperature optimum was found to occur round about 20°c and a maximum at about 24.5°C. For one clone an optimum was found at about 23°C. The minimum was found to lie somewhere below 5°C, but its exact position was not determined. At a temperature of 20°C a salinity optimum was found between about 14 and 16°/oo Cl for various clones. The minimum was found to occur between 8 and 10°/oo Cl. It is highly probable that the present distribution of Metridium in the Baltic is controlled by salinity. Because of insufficient data it could not be decided whether the absence of Metridium in the Mediterranean is due to high temperatures in summer, but this seems a very likely explanation. On the strength of the data obtained in this research there is no reason to assume that the difference in size between coast- and offshore animals is genetically fixed. For the present it seems better to hold the environment responsible.
