Auguin (1899, fig. 35)
Description Bioluminescerende zee, ‘s nachts te Heist. Het merendeel van de bioluminescentie van de zee, wordt veroorzaakt door de aanwezigheid van fytoplanktonbloei, met name de microscopische dinoflagellaat (Noctiluca miliaris , synoniem van Noctiluca scintillans ) evenals sommige kwallen. Het licht wordt geproduceerd wanneer een geel pigment, luciferin, wordt geoxideerd in de aanwezigheid van luciferase, een enzym ook geproduceerd door het organisme. Het geproduceerde licht is meestal blauw-groen.
