Biology Type of larval development: planktotrophic, inferred from multispiral protoconch. [details]
Diagnosis Shell up to 25 mm high, fusiform, with rather high spire and moderately convex whorls, the later ones shouldered. Protoconch of 3-4 whorls, nearly smooth with a suprasutural cord and minute granules over the surface, demarcated from teleoconch by a marked “sinusigera” rim. Teleoconch sculpture of 3-4 first-order spiral cords and numerous intervening smaller cords, all somewhat scaly, and of strong axial folds. Aperture strongly thickened externally and internally, the inner rim with 6-7 denticles elongated towards inside the shell. Colour dirty white.
This species resembles superficially the littoral species Muricopsis cristata (Brocchi, 1814) but differs in lacking the purplish or pinkish hue usually present in the latter, in having a multispiral protoconch, and in having numerous, less elevated spirals, which do not form spines over the folds.
