Description Colonies olive-green, spherical, less frequently ± oval or slightly irregularly elongated, free-floating, fine, usually 1-3 up to 7 (8) mm in diameter. Filaments ± straight, slightly flexuous or bent, in colonies numerous radially arranged. Common mucilage colourless, slightly diffluent at the margin. Trichomes (4.5) 6-10 μm wide at the bases, ± constricted at cross-walls, ending by long hairs, which sometimes overlap the margin of the colonial mucilage; hairs 1-2µm wide. Sheaths fine, colourless, not lamellated, usually ± distinct. Cells barrel-shaped or rounded at the base, f isodiametric, more elongated and up to cylindrical in upper part, with aerotopes. Heterocytes basal, solitary, spherical to ellipsoid, 6-11.5 x 6-10.6 μm. Akinetes develop after fusion of several vegetative cells, cylindrical with rounded ends, straight or slightly bent, (38) 44-60 (-134?) x 6-18 μm. [details]
Distribution Planktic in stagnant, large, slightly eutrophic water bodies (lakes and larger artificial reservoirs, rarely secondary floating in rivers, also in coastal, slightly saline marine waters, forming also water blooms; recorded sporadically, mainly from northern parts of whole temperate zones of Eurasia and N America, in Europe especially from Denmark, England, Scandinavian lakes, Finland, Poland, N Germany, N Russia, Ukraine, also from bays of eastern Baltic Sea, rarely and occasionally up to central Europe (e. g., in Czech Republic). Data from tropical regions (Sri Lanka, Myanmar, India, Brazil) differ always by various characters and concern evidently other species. [details]
Harmful effect Microcystin-LR has been found in strains in the water column of 27 out of 37 oligotrophic lakes sampled in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. It has been reported to negatively impact human health as swimming can irritiate skin and create a rash, "Gloeo".
