Holotype Skull in the British Museum (Natural History), London: GERM 353a collected July 3, 1814. Number 353h-62.7.18.15 given by Herskovitz (1966) was in error; it refers to a specimen without data purchased in 1862. [details]
IUCN Red List Category Least Concern (LC) [details]
Synonymy The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin Tursiops aduncus has been only recently recognized as a separate species. Although an attempt has been made here to limit synonyms to those taxa described from the geographical region of non-overlap of T. truncatus with T. aduncus, with further research, some of the names now in the synonymy may be relegated to T. aduncus. A number of nominal species that relate to either one or the other of the two bottlenose dolphins (because they were named from the region of overlap of the two species) are listed in the database as "incertae sedis" and are not included above. Where holotype specimens exist for these, they have not yet been examined to determine their identity. [details]
