Abstract:
The Oceanological Observatory of Villefranche-sur-mer is one of the three marine science facilities of the Université Pierre-Marie-Curie (Paris VI). It originated as the Zological Station, established in 1885 on the Bay of Villefranche, a site of exceptional variety of marine life. The lack of continental shelf allows easy access to plankton and other organisms from the open ocean. Research at the OOV has specialized over time in studies of plankton, marine optics and developmental biology of marine organisms. The Observatory provides teaching in the areas of oceanography and marine environments, and developmental biology. It also is responsible for long term observation services for the French and international scientific community. The campus hosts two high level research units, LOV (http://www.obs-vlfr.fr/LOV/ [1]) and LBDV (http://biodev.obs-vlfr.fr [2])
