Abstract
The ultimate goal of ICZM in Belgium is a sustainable management of our coast with a focus on every aspect. Developing a set of key indicators for the Belgian coast is one of the ways to support policy implementation and review in such a complex matter as sustainable coastal management. At the European level, Belgium has pioneered thedevelopment and implementation of a set of 20 indicators for the coastal zone; an initiative of the Coordination Centre for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Through the development of an interactive website, a publication called 'the Coastal Compass', a SWOT analysis and evaluation of the key indicators, the Coordination Centre is attuning these indicators more closely to the pursued policy and constantly enhancing them into a bettertool for Integrated Coastal Zone Management.
