Abstract
    The Consultative Panel on Coastal Systems in co-sponsored by Unesco, the Scientific Committee for Oceanic research (SCOR) and the International Association for Biological Oceanography (IABO). The Panel's terms of reference are as followed:1. To review the present status and to advise on the conceptual planning in order to meet the objectives of the Unesco Major Interregional Project on research and training leading to the integrated management of coastal systems (COMAR).2. To review and advise on the scientific quality of the programme and recommend, if appropriate, actions to improve knowledge on the coastal systems.3. To review and recommend strategies to transfer the scientific knowledge in view of an integrated management of the coastal systems.4. To review and advise on the implementation of the various regional components of the Major Interregional Project (COMAR).The present report contains a detailed analysis by the Consultative Panel of the various components of the COMAR Project. The components can be broken down into (1) the scientific activities, undertaken in co-operation with SCOR and IABO, concerning traditional knowledge and management of coastal systems, and (2) programmes developed in the regions of Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, the Mediterranean and Red Seas, and Europe.
