Abstract
The Snaefellsnes peninsula is situated in the middle of the west Icelandic coast. Its hydrographic position along with great variations of shore configuration and geological structure yield conditions for the development of widely different vegetation types. The benthic algal vegetation of this peninsula is an intermediate between the one found in southern Iceland and the cold boreal vegetation of the western fjords. It is likewise the northern distributional limit for several species in Iceland (e.g. Pelvetia canaliculata, Dilsea carnosa, Dumontia contorta, Gloiosiphonia capillaris, Chondrus crispus) and at the same tide a conspicuous vegetation limit. Three ecologically different areas were investigated along its banks. They are described regarding the main algal associations and zonation patterns as well as gradients in low-salinity areas. Some algal associations are characteristic for this peninsula.
