Abstract
    The 1st Session of the IODE Group of Experts on Biological and Chemical Data Managementand Exchange Practices was held in Silver Spring, MD, USA, from 25-27 June 2002 and washosted by the National Oceanographic Data Center. The Group members presented anoverview of current activities in biological and chemical data management in their respectiveinstitutions. The Group discussed the need for an inventory of existing databases and agreedto define and distribute a questionnaire to request information about documenting systems,databases and inventories. The Group decided to commence planning for an internationalworkshop that would provide a forum for scientists to be informed of the latest developmentsin biological and chemical data management.
