Abstract
The Ocean Climate Laboratory of the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center has produced thisCD-ROM for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's (IOC) Ocean Data and InformationNetwork for Africa (ODINAFRICA). This project aims at addressing the data and informationrequirements of the 20 member states of ODINAFRICA. This CD-ROM is part of the ODINAFRICAeffort to assist in establishment of NODCs/DNAs in all participating member states. This CD-ROM is a subset of the World Ocean Database 2001 CD-ROM set. While the full WorldOcean Database 2001 Data Set Documentation is contained on this CD-ROM (in directory DOC, filereadme.pdf), the tables and station counts in that documentation are based on the entire WOD01 dataand not this subset for ODINAFRICA. Table 1 below contains the actual ODINAFRICA station counts. The World Ocean Database 2001 (WOD01) CD-ROM's, containing observed and standard level profile, plankton, and surface data, represent an update of the World Ocean Database products first released asWorld Ocean Atlas 1994 (WOA94) and followed by World Ocean Database 1998 (WOD98). TheWOD01 product expands on WOD98 by including new variables and data types. During the past threeyears, the number of data sets received at NODC/WDC, Silver Spring (National Oceanographic DataCenter/World Data Center for Oceanography, Silver Spring) has increased as a result of projects such asthe Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)/NODC Global Oceanographic DataArchaeology and Rescue project (GODAR), (Levitus et al., 1998, Levitus et al., 1994), NODC GlobalOcean Database project, IOC World Ocean Database project, Global Temperature-Salinity ProfileProject (GTSPP), World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies(JGOFS), Ocean Margin Experiment (OMEX), and many others.
