Abstract
During spring and summer 1977 the fluorescence production and the occurrence of fluorescence in the interstitial water of a tidal flat, the Balgzand, nearby Den Helder in the Dutch Wadden Sea was estimated. Nearby the coast the fluorescence in the interstitial water of the first centimeters of the bottom and the fluorescence of the surface water was higher than in the seaside region of the tidal flat. The fluorescence of interstitial water of the bottom of the Waddensea and the "Zeeuwse wateren" was estimated during trips on the vessels Eider and Maris Stella. Interstitial water of the bottom of the Wadden Sea showed a considerable higher fluorescence than the "Zeeuwse wateren" and was 10 to 20 times the fluorescence of surface water. A start was made to analyse the fluorescent material of the interstitial water of the Wadden Sea bottom.
