A little investigation is made concerning the natural fluorescence and the chlorinity of interstitial water in the bottom of the western part of the Dutch Wadden Sea in the winter situation. It is shown that there is a marked difference between the summer situation of the naturel fluorescence, investigated by Van Geldermalsen (1977), and the winter situation. This is in accordance with the yearly variation in the overlying sea- water, investigated by Postma, Manuels & Rommets (1976). The chlorinity of the interstitial water shows also a yearly variation. As the chlorinity is a conservative property, it can be used as a marker for the water exchange between the bottom and the overlying sea. The calculation of the exchange rate using a simple diffusion-equation shows a promising result. Still more work concerning the yearly variation has to be done.
