Abstract
An impregnation fluid, hardening according to chemical or physical reactions, will penetrate into the sediment to a depth which is mainly determined by the permeability of the sediment and the viscosity and the gelling time of the impregnation fluid. Five impregnation fluids have been used. The use of Araldite F with hardener HY 951 and Polyurethane turned out to be the most satisfactory for relatively dry, sandy samples and can be applied easily. For wet humic clayey sample Polyurethane and Cetaflex turned out to be most profitable. Polyurethane gives profiles with a high relief. Araldite F with hardener HY 951 and Cetaflex give profiles with a low relief in which the structure of the sediment shows itself very clearly. The Reineck box corer is elaborately dealt with.
