Abstract
1.The respiratory scope for activity of one year old plaice, in relation to temperature, reaches a maximum at about 19°C.2.The respiratory maintenance costs, defined as the ratio of Standard oxygen consumption in resting fish to the maximum oxygen consumption of active fish (Standard as % of active) increases with the temperature, especially at temperatures above 18°C.3. Favourable temperature conditions for growth and activity of young plaice may be found where maintenance costs are relatively low and the scope for activity relatively high, that is at about 18°C.4. The oxygen consumption of young plaice in air-saturated sea water, is limited at higher temperatures by limitation in the capacity of the respiratoy pump.
