Ramon Margalef and I have enjoyed many years of conversation about ecology and my remarks will celebrate our relationship. My life has gradually shifted from the hustle of the market place and consumption of money and goods to a academic career devoted to students and ideas. Students ask how they can avoid becoming trivial, how they can contribute to solving the dreadful problems that face human society? Students want to know from me, their senior, what are the big questions of ecological science. That is the motivation for me to think about the challenging questions ecologists are asking today, that may change the subject tomorrow.
