Abstract
This is the first version of the photo guide for meso pelagic species in the Northeast Atlantic. A unique product of a collaboration between research (Wageningen Marine Research WMR) and fishing practice (Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association PFA). Current climate change stimulates research into these unknown but important deep-sea species because of their unique living environment requirements. As early as the 1990s, Bram Couperus from WMR collected deep-sea species on board trawlers during his observer journeys. With the advent of the scientific survey on blue whiting, Sytse Ybema of WMR took the lead in the development of a photo-identification guide for these fish to facilitate future research. From 2008 standard photos are being made of special species caught during the blue whiting survey.
