The area of origin of Bugulina stolonifera is unknown. The species is recognised globally as an alien species part of the biofouling community on ship hulls. The first European observation dates back to 1960, in Great Britain. In 1976, the species was first observed in Belgium in the Sluice Dock of Ostend. Later, it was found in the Port of Ostend and Zeebrugge and on beachheads in Koksijde. B. stolonifera appears to be resistant to low and varying salinities and pollution, which allows it to thrive in ports.
