Nowadays, the red algae Caulacanthus okamurae occurs in large parts of the world. It prefers hard substrate in the intertidal zone, but can also be found in brackish water and mangroves. This red alga originates from the Pacific region and is thought to have reached European seas via oyster transport. In Belgium, Caulacanthus okamurae was observed for the first time in 2011, in the Bay of Heist, located near the eastern breakwater of the Port of Zeebrugge. The seaweed is small and inconspicuous and therefore easily overlooked.
