The Brackish-water corbula Potamocorbula amurensis originates from the northwestern Pacific coastal regions. The clam was detected in the Western Scheldt in 2018 and was likely introduced by larvae transported in ship ballast water. The species is rapidly spreading in the estuary, and based on observed effects on ecosystems abroad, there is potential for impact on native fauna here as well.
