The Purple fan-worm Bispira polyomma was first observed in the Dutch Eastern Scheldt near Yerseke in 2010. Since the biodiversity of this location had been thoroughly studied previously without encountering this species, it is believed to be introduced. The origin area of the species remains unknown. It is likely that the species was introduced via vessels or shellfish transport, although concrete evidence for this is currently lacking. The species was definitively observed in 2018 (and likely as early as 2015) in the marina of Zeebrugge. Observations of the Purple fan-worm are limited to habitats with hard substrates.
