Abstract
    De Japanse oester Crassostrea gigas of ‘creuse’ komt van nature voor in Zuidoost-Azië en werd in 1969 in België geïmporteerd als alternatief voor de falende kweek met de lokale Platte oester Ostrea edulis. Men dacht oorspronkelijk dat de Japanse oester zich hier niet zou kunnen voortplanten vanwege het koude klimaat. Ze vestigt zich op alle mogelijke harde ondergronden (dijken, strandhoofden, mosselbanken, etc.), waarbij ze in concurrentie treedt voor ruimte en voedsel met lokale mosselen en schaaldieren.
