Abstract
    De planktonische diatomee Odontella sinensis kwam vroeger enkel voor in de Indo-Pacifische regio, maar maakte in het begin van de 20e eeuw de overtocht naar Europa. Meer dan waarschijnlijk gebeurde deze verplaatsing via ballastwater in schepen. Nadien kon het leefgebied lokaal verder uitgebreid worden via transport met de heersende zeestromingen. Dit kiezelwier verspreidde zich op minder dan tien jaar over de Europese wateren. Het werd al in 1904 voor het eerst aan de Belgische kust opgemerkt. Het is ondertussen een algemene diatomeeënsoort, die een vaste plaats inneemt in het marien plantaardig plankton.
