Abstract
    In the frame of the BEON-spear point Habitat disturbance it was quickly noticed, that the type of questions that could be asked concerning this, can only be handled efficiently, when one disposes of a clear, preferably geographic classification of the brackish waters in the Netherlands. Such a classification, which did previously exist for terrestrial systems and different sorts of fresh water, was not available for brackish water. The development of a system that could be used as such, therefore, became the priority of one of the projects, coming under the head of this spear point: mapping habitats/ecotopes in the Dutch brackish waters (last issue: IBN 96 H 25). In sub studies of this project research has been done on which (a)biotic factors determine the existence of soil animals and fish in different brackish waters and how, and what the composition of those fauna components is. A brief literature study after the definitions and concepts, lead to the conclusion, that the desired classification should take place based on ecotopes. In a separate subproject criteria by which ecopodes could be distinguished, were formulated. Among others, information from other sub studies has been used, only moderate attention was given to the processes through which ecotopes are formed and preserved, compared to the factors that are relevant to the flora and fauna. A hierarchic system was then created from characteristics of ecotopes, leading to a list of ecotopes. An attempt has been made to follow already existing classifications for terrestrial and fresh water- systems. In this report, no parameter classes are given, because these can vary by distinguished ecotope in different water systems, and even by goal of a certain study. The specially developed GIS-application HABIMAP is applied to, based on the ecotope system, execute a mapping. In two projects of the Rijkswaterstraat, RIKZ, not coming under BEON, similar mappings have been done for the Western Scheldt and the North Sea. The results of the mapping of the Wadden Sea are appended to this report as a appendix. This provides a good basis for a totally developed ecotope system in the Dutch brackish waters.
